Proposal
A stupa is a Buddhist dome-shaped structure with a spire on top originally built to contain relics. Many traditions, architecture forms, and philosophies followed it as it spread through Asia. Stupas are a common sight in Buddhist temples these days, and they come in a range of shapes, sizes, and purposes. Some are relic-filled, while others aren't. A set of stupas may be built in a systematic manner to fulfill an architectural concept for a large temple complex.
- man_made=stupa is approved for tagging node/area of the stupa.
- tower:type=stupa (combined with man_made=tower) is deprecated.
Rationale
- man_made=tower page stated "A tower is a free-standing structure which is higher than it is wide". While it is true that many stupas are taller than they are wide, this is not always the case. Though it is debatable whether it is a tower or not, everyone knows and agrees that it is a stupa.
- man_made=tower page also compare it with man_made=mast "In comparison a man_made=mast is often a single mast of concrete or steel. A tower is accessible and provides platforms, whereas a mast only offers ladder steps to climb it.". A stupa is neither a tower nor a mast, according to this definition, since it is inaccessible (in most cases) and lacks any ladders or platforms. As a result, the man_made=tower tag should not be applied to any stupas.
- Since not all stupas are historically significant, tagging them all with a historic tag would be inappropriate. However, a historic=monument, historic=memorial, or historic=tomb could be used in combination if it suits.
- Since there are only around 1,100 tower:type=stupa tags at the moment, revising the tagging method now is preferable than waiting for it to grow.
- A method of tagging a historic=wayside_cross and a man_made=cross for Christian society works similarly to this stupa proposal.
Tagging
Tag the node or area of each stupa's footprint with man_made=stupa. If it's fitting, other tags like historic, tourism, building, name, and so on may be used in combination.
For a historically significant stupa, add historic=monument if it is large enough to be seen in the city landscape. For smaller ones, use the appropriate historic=memorial or historic=tomb. A historic tag should not be added to a general stupa with little historical importance.
For the massive monument, which consists of several stupas on the same platform that is accessible and large enough to walk on comfortably, tag man_made=stupa to every stupa on the platform. The entire monument structure should be tagged with historic=monument, and the platform outline should be tagged with barrier=retaining_wall, or some other appropriate tag.
Do not tag man_made=stupa to a mostly destroyed stupa. Instead, use historic=ruins + ruins=stupa. For structures that have minor damage but are still recognisable, simply add ruins=yes to the man_made=stupa things (as described in ruins tag guidelines).
Do not tag man_made=stupa to a tiny stupa that resembles a sculpture (e.g. the 1-meter tall ones).
Examples
Browse Wikimedia for more diverse examples.
Some local or traditional words used in some places, such as chedi, dagaba, zedi, pagoda, and so on, do not imply that it is not a stupa.
Rendering
A new icon with the same color as the other man_made icons. Render the area if building tag is tagged.
For 3D map, it may be rendered like a cone-shaped building. If height tag is given, the height could be specified.
Features/Pages affected
- Add stupa as a value to Page Key:man made
- Remove stupa from a list in Page Key:tower:type

- I approve this proposal. I would have been ok with historic as a tag as well, man_made works for me. We should not remove the value from the tower:type documentation as long as it is in use, but we could add a hint about alternative tagging —Dieterdreist (talk) 14:01, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. As far as I can see it makes sense (if someone more familiar with this objects is aware of problems - please comment! I have never seen or mapped a stupa) --Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:43, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
