Roads

Road Classification

Use highway to classify the importance and usage of a way. Use tracktype to roughly classify the quality (regarding surface and smoothness conditions) of a way. To give more details on the quality, use surface and smoothness. For ways that cannot be used by cars, use either highway=path or a highway according to the importance of the way (for example highway=residential) together with a tag indicating the barriere for cars (for example width).

The main types of roads that can be encountered are:

Type Reference Classification
Expressway (đường cao tốc) CT.## highway=motorway
National road (quốc lộ) QL.## highway=trunk or highway=primary
Provincial road (đường tỉnh, tỉnh lộ) ĐT.### or TL.### highway=secondary
District road (hương lộ, đường huyện) HL## or ĐH## highway=tertiary

Access restrictions

Note that in general, motorbikes and scooters of any kind are not allowed on motorways in Vietnam, add motorcycle=no to prevent routing issues.

Urban streets and alleys

The name of an alley generally consists of:

  1. The local word for "Alley": Ngõ or Ngách in northern Vietnam, Kiệt in central Vietnam, and Hẻm in southern Vietnam
  2. A series of numbers indicating the alleys that lead from the main street to the alley, separated by slashes
  3. The name of the main street

Examples:

The addr:street=* value of each POI or building along the alley should match the alleyway's name=*.

Help

Users who are ready to help beginners to contribute in Vietnam Mapping Project:

  • Contact capiscuas AT gmail.com if you would like to participate and don't know how to start

Possible data sources

  • The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has public domain country files with basic information on placenames. Nevertheless, it contains many errors and many towns are missplaced.
  • The AsiaGPS forum contains many GPS traces from Vietnam and Asia. Please contact them to encourage them to release their data into OSM.

Bing imagery

Bing imagery is not well aligned on some parts of the country. Download GPS tracks to check for correct alignment. Until Bing fix it, you need to manually enter the offset in JOSM (right-click on Bing layer -> New offset).

Date, Region/City, and offset of observed misalignments:

  • 2013-03, Hué, offset: 0.000126;-0.0000315

Da Nang (March 2019)

File:Da Nang Tracks from March 2019 Drive.png
Car GPS tracks driven during Kaart's ground survey in Da Nang, Vietnam. Imagery provided by Bing.
Ground Focus
  • Visual collection of street names, updating street names with correct prefixes (Đường, Kiệt etc.) and syntax.
  • Verification of one ways.
  • Properly tagging narrow streets that are only accessible by moped/motorcycle.
Post Processing
  • Adding surfaces, lanes, crossings, signals and additional geometry.
  • Street name, ref and highway classification consistency.
  • Adding turn lanes/restrictions and overall road connectivity.
Suggested Community Edits
  • Geometry correction and addition of small, narrow roads in downtown Da Nang is heavily needed and many are innacessible by car.
  • Further name verification and addition should be continued throughout the outskirts of Da Nang.

Hanoi (April 2019)

File:Hanoi Tracks.jpg
Car GPS tracks driven during Kaart's ground survey in Hanoi, Vietnam. Imagery provided by Bing.
Ground Focus
  • Visual collection of street names, updating street names with correct prefixes (Ngõ, Ngách etc.) and syntax.
  • Properly tagging narrow streets that are only accessible by moped/motorcycle.
  • Clarifying one ways that allow for motorcycle/moped traffic in both directions.
Post Processing
  • Adding surfaces, lanes, crossings, signals and additional geometry.
  • Street name and classification consistency.
  • Adding turn lanes/restrictions and conditional restrictions from signs primarily directed at limiting motorcar traffic.
Suggested Community Edits
  • As with Da Nang, many narrow roads are poorly represented in OSM and inaccessible by car.
  • Many neighborhoods are represented by a block naming structure rather than a street naming structure and need accurate areas drawn in.

Ho Chi Minh (June 2019)

Ground Focus
  • Visual collection of street names, updating street names with correct prefixes (Ngõ, Ngách Hẻm etc.) and syntax.
  • Verification of one ways.
  • Properly tagging narrow streets that are only accessible by moped/motorcycle.
Post Processing
  • Adding surfaces, lanes, crossings, signals and additional geometry.
  • Street name and classification consistency.
  • Adding turn lanes/restrictions and conditional restrictions from signs primarily directed at limiting motorcar traffic.
  • Improving overall road connectivity.
