Description

A Bureau de Change (using the widest accepted international name) is a generally small office or kiosk that changes foreign bank notes and travellers cheques and usually does nothing else. It is an important amenity for tourists and in some countries, like the Philippines, is an important part of everyday life.

This was proposed in January 2007 along with amenity=banks and amenity=atm, which are now in the standard set. The reason for delay in acceptance seems to be the name used as it varies between countries. I'm still happiest with the French bureau_de_change as, having visited 50 countries during my career, it will have the widest recognition and has a long history. And, to be honest, I don't realy want to go back and change over 100 entries already made! currency_exchange appears to be the leading alternative. Opinions welcome, I'd like to see this closed off.

  • How would a site which is also a bank be tagged? Joto 07:57, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Good question. To date, if it is a bank, I've tagged it amenity=bank only. The general assumption being that a I approve this proposal.bank changes money as part of general service. But you are right, some banks offer very prominent bureau de change facilities that would be nice to tag, and it may be that some banks don't change money. I think this is a general problem though. For example, I have pubs with a restaurant and an atm machine. I have to put 3 nodes next to each other. MikeCollinson 03:09, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
As stated in comments for Proposed_features/ATM_or_Cash_Point, semi-colon appears be used to separate values, i.e amenity=bank;bureau_de_change i guess.
Where I live, not all banks offer currency exchange (it is rare, but happens) and not all exchage offices are banks. So separating the two is a good idea. Btw, why "bureau de change" and not "exchange office"? Ovidiusoft 14:20, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
"exchange office" causes me to think of an office in a telephone exchange, but, that said, I'd suggest something along the lines of "currency_exchange" or "foreign_currency_exchange", though that second one is a bit long, would be a better value than "bureau de change". I'm also not sure about it being an amenity, I'd suggest an additional key to describe the cash related service available and use a value that describes foreign currency exchange as being a more flexible approach that could allow the tag be applied to any location offering the service e.g. banks, travel agents, supermarkets, tourist information offices, petrol stations etc... There are many phrases in many countries to describe these offices, for example "Money Changer" where I am now. "Bureau de Change" will have the most widespread recognition. It goes back to when French was the language of tourism. MikeCollinson 09:20, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
I've proposed it under the "amenity=" tag as 1) it is a basic amenity if your are a tourist, 2) It fits in well with a suite of Bank, ATM, Bureau de Change. I am specifically targetting this at generally small offices/desks that offer change foreign notes and travellers cheques and usually do nothing else. I have personally recorded about 100 already!
