Rationale
Motorway exits are different from motorway links. They don't lead to another motorway but instead to a less significant road. Furthermore, they can be described by an exit number and/or an exit name (where applicable).
Applies to
Linear features.
Usage
<tag k="highway" v="motorway_exit"/> <tag k="exit_nr" v="<number of the exit>"/> <tag k="exit_name" v="<name of the exit>"/>
Examples
<tag k="highway" v="motorway_exit"/> <tag k="exit_nr" v="17"/> <tag k="exit_name" v="Gloggnitz"/> | |
<tag k="highway" v="motorway_exit"/> <tag k="exit_nr" v="52"/> <tag k="exit_name" v="Mägenwil"/> | |
<tag k="highway" v="motorway_exit"/> <tag k="exit_nr" v="34"/> <tag k="exit_name" v="Pont de l'Étoile"/> |
Labelling exits?
Typical motorway junction has 4 exits - how about labelling them in a way that would be unique?
e.g. a motorway "exit" near me might be described as
- highway = motorway_ramp
- junction:road_name = M1
- junction:number = 14
- junction:type = entrance
- junction:carriageway = N
That could be read as "the entrance ('on-ramp') to M1's northbound carriageway at junction 14"

Using wikipedia as source
I've just noticed this page at wikipedia, containing a full list of junctions for each motorway, the road numbers they connect to, etc. Seems to come from Morwen (see edit)
Also Chris' British Road Directory
And another page with information on some of the more unique features of certain motorways [1]

Point junctions
For the benefit of renderers, can we have a node in the centre of each motorway juntion, so that we can draw a circle with a number in it? Ojw 12:01, 17 September 2006 (BST)
- junction = motorway
- name = M25 J14
- optionally split that name into
- junction:road_name = M25
- junction:ref = 14
Possibilities for the name field: basically free-text describing the junction as succinctly as possible
- 14
- J14
- M25 J14 (where different motorways are close, and need to be differentiated)
- M25 J12, M4 J3 (junction between two motorways)
- A1 J12 (autoroute)
- For the benefit of open source car navigation software (perhabs someone will write soon?), we need the number on the road or on a node which is driven throu.Sven Anders 12:26, 20 September 2006 (BST)
Do we need highway=motorway_exit
I think its not good to make a difference between motorway_link and motorway_exit. So I would vote to make the other tags like described above, but tag the exit highway=motorway_link.
Whats the difference? In Germany
- also "Autobahnkreuze" (motorway links) have exit numbers
- you should drive up to 60 km/h on a motorway link
- you should drive up to 60 km/h on a motorway exit.
- I would also tag motorway service areas with motorway_links (and put a node with amenity=parking amenity=fuel ..)
The proposed use for this tag seems to be exactly the same as the comments for how the existing feature motorway_link is to be used, which states "The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a motorway". Dmgroom 15:08, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Do we really need another tag?
I think its better to have not to many tags on the map. Sven Anders 08:58, 18 September 2006 (BST)
- I don't think many different highway types are a problem, if they are used consistently and are well-defined (which is a prerequisite of the former). However I have a growing conviction that motorway links and exits/entries should really be tagged as the same highway type, for they are the same as you correctly state. In any case I object to the use of highway=motorway_link for service areas as their usage more closely reflects a highway=unclassified. --GabrielEbner 16:56, 18 September 2006 (BST)
I think it is good idea, creating map I found it very valuble, especialy if you have in minde navigation software.Dubravko 08:13, 06 November 2006 (BST)
This has been here for quite a while, so I'll start a vote ok?... Personally I can't see much difference between this and motorway_link. I disagree with the paragraph under 'Rationale'. Motorway_link does not just go between motorways, but it is a link road onto a motorway from any road. Motorway_links can also have a exit number. Would ref= and name= not cover the rest of the information above? Maybe the other things discussed need an additional vote. Ben. 4:45 18th Decemeber 2006 (UTC)

I disapprove this proposal, as motorway_link is already in widespead use, but we could do with a tag to describe which junction number a junction is. Bruce89 13:41, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
