This seems to be used by some people to mark a path as being a desire line (or desire path). See Desire path on Wikipedia.

It's probably useful to map only prominent/permanent desire lines. Currently it's mainly used in the United Kingdom and some parts of Central Europe.

Note that desire lines are by definition unofficial, so the access rights may well be ambiguous.
