Proposal
A vehicle inspection station is a place where road vehicles are inspected for compliance with safety and/or emissions regulations.
Rationale
In many countries vehicles need to be inspected periodically at an inspection station. The vehicle is checked for compliance with safety regulations and in some areas, the vehicle's emissions are tested. In Finland most vehicles need to be inspected every year and there are ~170 inspection stations in the country. All EU member states are mandated to carry out periodic safety/emission inspections for most road vehicles.
Tagging
amenity=vehicle_inspection. Applies to nodes and areas (buildings).

Comments
- If necessary, the tag could be expanded with additional tags to describe what kind of vehicles can be inspected at the station or if one can perform theoretical tests for driving licenses at the facility (which is common in Finland) --Kenkku 10:24, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
- Should rather be tagged as shop=inspection_station, or something else. This service are either covered by car workshops, or by governmental or semi-governmental units. --Skippern 22:24, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- On the United States Interstate system, there are truck (HGV) inspection stations every 50-100 miles (80-160 km) or so. These stations mainly enforce weight restrictions, but some also enforce safety and hazardous load restrictions. Depending on the state (operator=* tag?) HGVs can be equipped with an electronic transponder that allows them to bypass the station under certain circumstances. I'd like to suggest the following tags.
electronic_bypass=(Boolean Yes/No, Default No)
transponder_network=*
