Our vision

“Mapping each and every corner of Africa on OpenStreetMap, “ State of the Map Africa 2023-Livingstone will be an event where we celebrate the diversity of the OpenStreetMap community in Africa and the achievements. Zambia is among the developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa that have experienced high demand for geospatial technology. This event will bring together all OpenStreetMap Africa Communities and organizations using OpenStreetMap data to scale development in Africa by sharing their experiences in the use of geospatial data. In the bid to increase OSM usage and awareness, Zambia is the heart of Southern Africa and will bring together all Southern and other African countries so that they share their achievements and promote OSM both in government and private institutions.

Why Livingstone?

Zambia is a beautiful country with beautiful cities and towns. The country has an array of national parks, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, a rich history and warm people. Livingstone is one of the beautiful cities in Zambia. It is a few kilometres from The Zambezi River, the fourth-longest river in Africa. It houses the smallest National Park in the country, Mosi-oa-Tunya, adjacent to the Victoria Falls, one of the worlds’ largest waterfalls. Whether here to stay for long or not, accommodation facilities are varied in location and affordability. Places are easily accessible because of the town’s good road network. The people are friendly, welcoming and always wearing a smile.

Livingstone city, once the capital of the country before independence, is rich in natural resources. It was described by Dr. David Livingstone whose’ name the town is named after as providing views that must have been “gazed upon by angels in their flight”. Some of these natural resources make it a tourist capital. It is the main entry point by road from Southern African countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.

Livingstone has a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy. Some of these spectacular outdoor activities that attract tourists to the town of Livingstone include white water rafting, canoeing, horse riding, bungee jumping, boat cruises, and quad bike riding. A variety of national parks nearby provide the opportunity to see some of Africa’s most revered wildlife, from elephants to lions.

The Livingstone Museum is worth a visit. It is the oldest museum in the country. Within its walls, the building showcases the story of Zambian colonialism and independence from a more nationalistic perspective, alongside a room dedicated to Dr. David Livingstone and information about Zambia’s 73 recognised tribes.

Livingstone is easily accessible both by air and road. Sitting only 15 kilometers from Victoria Falls and 5 kilometers from downtown is Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport. The road system in the country easily helps one to move to, within and through Livingstone easily.

Having the event in Livingstone will be an opportunity for participants to learn how Central and Southern Africa is embracing and using OpenStreetMap to put many people on the map as well as using it to implement many development programs as we continue living in a world adapting to exist amid Covid 19. We believe Livingstone is the best venue for next year’s State of The Map Africa event. Livingstone offers the best conferencing facilities, accommodation and easy movement within and out of the city with enough places for social activities.
