The tag archaeological_site=rock_painting specifies an archaeological site as a rock or cave painting. As a type of rock art, rock paintings involve adding some form of pigment to the rock surface to create the artwork.
Historical artwork made by removing part of the rock surface are tagged as archaeological_site=petroglyph. Where there is both painting and carving (and/or engraving) consider archaeological_site=rock_art.
