A shunt capacitor (436-02-02) act as a power factor corrector by compensating reactive power. They are connected in parallel of a given network edge or switch gears.
Such capacitors got cuboid shape and definitely don't look like a coil or a cylinder. They used to be stacked according to illustration and are easily distinguishable from other substation equipment.
It differs from series_capacitor as one end of the capacitor is connected to the line to compensate and the other can be grounded or connected to other capacitors if involved in a set (multi phase systems).
They are mainly found in substations and used on alternative current networks.
How to map
First of all, please refer to general guidelines on power=compensator.
A shunt capacitor may be composed of several independent devices, called a set, serving each phase of a multi-phase power line.
In such situations, it is possible to map the capacitors set on a single node and adding cables=*, just like power=switch.
It is also possible to use as many nodes as cables and connect them accordingly.

A stack of shunt capacitors connected to 3 phases power network. According to picture author, it's a 75 MVAr rated capacitor connected to a 150 000 volts power grid.
We know it's a shunt capacitor due to common neutral point on the foreground which connect each of the 3 stacks which got each one phase from the power grid at their top. |
