The term Bergfried signifies in German technical literature a non-residential defensive tower of a medieval castle. This type was widely used since 12th century in Central Europe. Usually it was the last retreat position in case of an attack. Therefore the entrance was very high usually. If the main tower of the castle was meant as residential we call it donjon or keep (see defensive=donjon and defensive=keep).
