The tag designation=quiet_lane is used to describe the legal classification of a highway (e.g. highway=unclassified).

Current usage

This tag is exclusively used in England to describe a type of public highway, usually a country lane (e.g. highway=unclassified) with fewer than 1,000 vehicles using it per day.[1] Designation of a highway as a quiet lane is made by a local authority, under the provisions of The Quiet Lanes and Home Zones (England) Regulations 2006. Advisory signage must be in place at both ends of a quiet lane to indicate its designation.[2]

Motor vehicles are not prohibited from using quiet lanes. Instead, drivers are encouraged to exercise caution when travelling along the highway and to respect other road users (e.g. pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders).[1] The quiet lane signage indicates the priority of the different transport modes on the highway, with pedestrians having the highest priority and motor vehicles having the lowest. [2]

Rule 218 of the Highway Code states that drivers should "drive slowly and carefully" on quiet lanes and "be prepared to stop to allow people extra time to make space for you to pass them in safety".

In the United Kingdom, this tag is to only be used on highways legally designated as a quiet lane.
