This tag indicates that a regional flag is hoisted on a flagpole. For the purpose of this tag, a "region" is usually a first-level country subdivision, such as a state or province. Generally speaking, this tag is for civil flags; other kinds of governmental flags can be tagged flag:type=governmental or flag:type=military as appropriate.

Where to find them

Regional flags are commonly flown in countries that grant significant autonomy to their regions, such as in a federal system of government.

In the United States, state flags are usually flown outside state and local government offices. They are also commonly flown under or alongside the American flag. It is rare for a state flag to be flown by itself without some other kind of flag present.

Additional tags

Indicate the specific flag or flag design using the flag:name=* and/or flag:wikidata=* tag.
