The footway=path tag is used to designate footways that are intended for general pedestrian use but are not associated with a road or street. This tag represents paths that are often found in parks, forests, or other natural areas, where the path exists independently of any roadway infrastructure.

This is in contrast to footway=sidewalk, which refers to paths specifically adjacent to roads for pedestrian use.

Use Case

  • Paths in parks, forests, or open areas, where walking is allowed and common, but no direct street or road infrastructure exists nearby.
  • Independent walking paths connecting different areas, without following the course of a road.
