Status: de facto

A lateral water hazard is a natural obstacle, such as sea, river & stream, that runs alongside to or parallel to the golf hole. Usually marked by red stakes or lines, they are covered by specific rules.

Before 2019, a 'lateral water hazard' had different golf rules compared to a 'water hazard' thus the different tag was used. In many countries this is no longer the case, as of 2020, however, both tags are still commonly found in the database.

How to map

Tag the feature with golf=lateral_water_hazard.

If mapping ponds & lakes, draw an area area around the ground and additionally add both natural=water & the appropriate water=* tag.

If mapping rivers, streams or ditches, draw either a single linear way way and add the appropriate waterway=* tag, or as a polygon representing the banks of the feature and add both natural=water & the appropriate water=* tag.
