Grit bins, salt bins or sand bins are located in countries where freezing temperaters and snowfall occurs - they are mainly in hilly areas. They hold grit (sand and fine gravel), salt, or a mixture of salt and grit for people to spread on nearby roads. The grit helps improve winter road safety.

How to map

Just place a node at right place. Tag it as amenity=grit_bin.

Additional the features can be mapped:

  • content=sand/salt/... - Content of the bin
  • colour=green/brown/yellow/... - Colour of the bin
  • material=plastic/wood/metal/... - Material of the bin

In some countries and/or towns the access to the content of the grit bin may be restricted. So an additional access=* may be necessary. The access may be one of:

  • access=*
    • access=yes - everyone is free to use the grit / salt (also access=public is/was used, however it is a undocumented duplicate of access=yes)
    • access=permissive - only a selected group is free to use; i.e. residents, local authorities Although this definition was included in the proposal for this tag and has occasionally been used, it conflicts with the normal definition of access=permissive and may cause confusion
    • access=private - the bin is owned by i.e. a company or a school
  • seasonal=yes - if grit bin is present at given location only for part of the year, seasonal=winter can be used and from context it would be indicating that it is present only during winter

Images

In the UK, grit bins are typically brightly coloured; yellow is common but red and orange bins exist. (can be tagged with colour=yellow, material=plastic)
