Using this tag is discouraged, use man_made=tower + tower:type=bell_tower. The subtype of the bell tower (campanile, klockstapel, etc.) should be tagged with bell_tower=* instead.

A free standing bell tower, typically near a church. It was very popular to build free standing, typical wooden, bell towers for churches up until the 18th century (at least in Sweden).
