Petanque (or pétanque) is a sport that falls into the category of boules sports, along with raffa, bocce, boule lyonnaise, lawn bowls and crown green bowling.
Consider using tag sport=boules instead if it applies to objects where sport is not restricted to solely petanque.
For example for leisure=pitch solely for petanque sport=petanque would fit, while one also for lyonnaise / bocce / bocce volo would be better tagged as sport=boules.
