break into sections
Now that this is split out onto its own page (from Google Map Maker where I wrote it originally) we can break it up into more sections on 'search' etc. -- Harry Wood (talk) 12:35, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Google vector data access?
I'm really not much of an expert of google's offerings, but I need to keep an eye on this to make sure I'm not making any incorrect assertions when I'm speaking publicly about the OpenStreetMap advantage
Recently there's been a bunch of press about google's new maps going vector powered. (As of May 2013) I've only seen demo videos, but it appears to be javascript rendering the vectors. Maybe equivalent to something like Kothic.js. They've had vector powered stuff on android for a while too.
The only reviews of this I've seen, have focused on the end user experience. So the question in my mind is... is it still true to say that google doesn't offer open access to the raw map data? It may still be true, if these interfaces all access the data via proprietary obfuscated or ToU restricted interfaces. But I also came across thi page which appears to document a vector data API. Not clear if that's a new thing.
