Would it be feasible to quickly start a hiking map by duplicating the cycle map, make some adaptions and work from that base? It is very similar. At the moment there is no hiking map at all. The motivation to map hiking routes is very low as they cannot be seen anywhere. --Nop 23:19, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

gathering man power

This page is a very good idea ! I have a similar project (just for the french alps), but it is more at a stage of a "mind concept". I'm currently lacking material support (online server, great bandwidth, time) while I think I have the required sys admin skills... As ever, those ideas just needs a "just do it" stage. It already exists ;-) See : Hiking/openhikingmap. But still, as it grows on popularity, I'm lacking a more powerful server, or time to optimize things and rendering is getting later an later behind the osm database. However, it's great to know that you can help on the bandwidth/hosting part, but my main concern is to "find" (read, "find money") a much better server. I don't think a unified hiking map is really feasible. I believe a hiking map should also show hiking routes. My hiking map is just spanning Germany, Austria and Switzerland and there are already several different marking schemes, organizational patterns and diskussions around hiking routes in that area. There are detailed marks vs. colors only, numbers vs. creative icons, hiking routes vs. way networks. A good hiking map will have to handle regional differences and this might be easier for specialized maps than for a global one. --Nop 09:48, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Sure ! Multi-maps will always be a good thing and the better way to go, what he was asking (I suppose) was, how do we reach an "opencyclemap" like coverage for a large audience. In other terms, which project is close to achieve that and could receive help. sletuffe 09:54, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Contours

Sorry I may be duplicating other suggestions, or missed something.

I frequently use the standard openstreetmap cycle map printed directly from the browser for hiking. It is the only standard OSM layer I can find on my web browser with contours, unless I'm missing something. Every other link I've gone to shows shaded relief, not contours. Only contours are useful, to know actual gradients for hiking. Relief shading is a waste of time.

All I would like to see is the cycling layer with marked cycle routes removed as a layer option, call it anything, e.g. contour map, hiking map or whatever. If anyone knows where I can find this easily, please let me know. Highlit footpaths would be a bonus, but unnecessary.Lkingscott (talk) 07:19, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Many thanks, not bad, but the footpath and track colours are black (standard OSM footpaths are red), so difficult to see as they blend into other features.Lkingscott (talk) 16:22, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Roadmap

Are they still people working on that project? I'm mapping the paths of my region and it would be very useful to be able to see them on such a map.

I'am working on integrating ASTER contours and hill-shade background which looks very good. I've also enhanced my styles to represents springs, drinking_water, view points, moutain_pass, and many others. But I still do only cover the alps and a bit more. It depends on what you are doing with it. As I've read it, commercial use is not possible + you need to have a specific restricted liste of usage for it, a combined map between osm and ASTER result in a map not usable for commercial use which is my case.
