Talk:Homebrew hardware
Has anybody thought of a server where you could have people uploading their current position, heading and speed to monitor the traffic and avoid traffic jams ? I'm thinking about implementing something along those lines, but I'm aware that the project will only benefit when there is a high number of people collaborating also. I'm also thinking about using the GSM cell tower info from the cellphones so that you could get a location fix without a GPS, but that's going to required the mapping of the cell towers. Anybody can help me out pointing to projects that try to address these ideas ? Thanks in advance, Diogo
- I came up with the same idea few years back (but without the gsm cell tower info). Last summer I read that some cell phone operator already marketed such a service, but using only the tower information (to which they have better access). To be of real value to users it would require massive userbase with gprs (or other) flat rate data service and massive processing (one slow car doesn't necessarily mean a traffic jam) - and I haven't even tried to calculate the required bandwidths or amount of data transmitted per every stretch of road. Sorry, don't know of any projects. Alv 21:40, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
More neat stuff
I'm not sure if the app Prune qualifies as "neat stuff", I'm reluctant to add it myself because I wrote it :) Does it belong on this page too? I'm also working on some lower-level gadgets, like a (very simple) GUI for mkgmap, and a command line "OsmWrangler" to remove certain amenity types from an OSM file (for when I don't care about public telephones or car parks). I don't think they're particularly "neat" but maybe they're interesting? Eric2 10:20, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
entry criteria
This 'Neat Stuff' list is a bit unspecific and has no defined entry criteria. It was set up a long time ago. The selections on there seem a bit random nowadays. -- Harry Wood 13:14, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Moved from 'Neat stuff' to 'Homebrew hardware'
This page was moved from 'Neat stuff' to this name 'Homebrew hardware' ( 21:29, 2 December 2011 !i! ) without discussion.
Making Tracks with Homebrew-ware is also redirected here now, but still lots of incoming links to that Special:WhatLinksHere/Making Tracks with Homebrew-ware. e.g the beginners guide currently links there for open source software letting you edit GPX tracks.
Some sorting out needed

- Hi, I did the move because IMHO the title wasn't that specific. Because what is "neat" stuff in the OSM universe (for a longer time)? Is it 3D or HaptoRender? Nobody knows and thus doesn't expects it here? So as most content was just hardware related, I renamed it to collect DIY hardware projects. Was that a bad idea?
- For the making tracks section isn't that a good landing point, I agree. Unfortunatly the guide is very outdated, some germans give it a new try and we now have LearOSM.org. So what to do? IMHO the link isn't that important to newbies, so we can delete it? --!i! 12:56, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
