Circumference or girth
As raised by me in the discussion page for Tag:natural=tree, the normal English term for the round measurement of a tree trunk is girth. This is used by pretty much everyone interested in or connected with trees, in the UK at least. The word circumference could also refer to the circumference of the spread of the tree (i.e. the spread of the tree crown). The standard measurements for a an amenity tree are its girth, spread and height. I've not seen the word circumference used anywhere else for the girth or spread except for a technical definition, and on its own it would be ambiguous. Indigomc 09:45, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Height above ground
In international forest related literature the established term for the horizontal length around the outside of the trunk is girth, but it is usually measured at 1.3m above ground. The size of trunks is also commonly given as diameter at breast height (dbh). --NotBob 16:05, 13 October 2012 (BST)
