This tag is not well defined
The more common values are duplicates of more established tags or do not add information:
farmland=field does not seem to add any information, and farmland=arable adds little information (generally, farmland must be arable, since arable land is land that can be used for growing crops).
farmland=pasture has been used, but landuse=meadow is the standard tag for meadows / pastures. See e.g. https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/meadow=pasture
There is also farmland=wetland which probably should be natural=wetland, and farmland=plant_nursery which could be landuse=plant_nursery in most cases. --Jeisenbe (talk) 01:20, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
- As for farmland=wetland, almost all seem intended to tag paddy fields in Japan. Although the need is reasonable (paddy fields have apparent characteristics distinct from other crop fields, like long-term flood irrigation), the choice of the term 'wetland' would be misleading and not best. --Mzaki (talk) 01:04, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Also farmland=paddy, paddy_field, rice and possibly flooded_crops seems for paddy fields worldwide. --Mzaki (talk) 02:29, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- farmland=terraced seems tagging for terraced fields. This also has an understandable need, considering the historical & cultural importance. However, terracing seems not restricted to crop fields; I guess orchards, vineyards, and meadows can be terraced, so a different tagging scheme (e.g. terraced=yes) would be better. --Mzaki (talk) 01:54, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
