Deprecation proposal

With subject=* existing and being in wide use (and even better: subject:wikidata=*, this might be a better fit. For example, 200 items have memorial:conflict=Holocaust which is not really a war/conflict. (I know, it was an important part of WWII, but it is _not_ a war in itself); some values have 'june deportation' which is not a conflict. (Furthermore, this also nicely sidesteps the semantic discussion of when something is a conflict and when this tag would be applicable.) Pietervdvn (talk) 21:48, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

memorial:conflict=* is both too vague and overspecific, but subject=* should be kept separate. I only think the format of this should be changed from underscored lowercase predefined entitied, to the same title case freeform text as subject=* .

Suggestion to link to wikidata instead

Taginfo shows huge discrepancies in the way battles are named. The Second World War has 494 entries for "WW2", 189 for "ww2", 127 for "WWII", 2 for "World War 2", not to mention countless combinations.

Using memorial:conflict:wikidata=* would solve this problem and make it easier to retrieve the correct battles.

Using memorial:conflict:wikidata=* is a good idea. I will apply this. --OSMRogerWilco (talk) 11:07, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Instead of using memorial:conflict:wikidata=*, I propose to just drop this key and use subject:wikidata=* instead. Pietervdvn (talk) 21:38, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
This can be used for the cause or background. subject=* may be used for a specific dead or event, and the entities depicted together alongside. It needs another solution. Proposal:Subject#Examples
