Questions on usage

This tag seems to be relatively little used (9K in total) [1]. Is there another tag that is used instead? or is this the right one which has little adoption yet. Possibly that is because the tag is unclear. Would it reasonable to assume that mooring is allowed on a man_made=pier unless otherwise stated using mooring=no? How should one tag a habour wall where it is possible to moor alongside? How does one tag a harbour wall, using barrier=*? What about mooring along a coastline, riverbank or side of a lake where there is a suitable firm structure that might not be a pier? I guess we also need to consider places where a small boat can be drawn up onto a beach. PeterIto 23:08, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Agree. Especially, what is difference between "yes" and "guest". Or "no" and "private". Normally when entering a Marina, there a plenty of boats moored (?), which have rented their berth, and there are just a few places for guests. So, I would understand "yes" and "guest" is pretty the same ... I think this page (and also the main map features page) are not clear. Opinions? --Nounours77 (talk) 09:58, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

I don't sail, but I've tagged a whopping two public mooring points. I'd assume:

• mooring=yes anybody can moor here (might be with a fee, or time limited - other tags for that)
• mooring=guest visitors to the land/pier owner's premises can moor here (might be with a fee, or time limited). Like a seaside restaurant with some places.
• mooring=private only those who have rented a space, or own the premises, can moor there
• mooring=no nobody is allowed to moor there, you might be blocking an entrace or a narrow point, or similar reasons.

These however seem to clash with the various other examples given, like "ferry" and "commercial". Alv (talk) 10:24, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Table from Marine Mapping

I have moved a table here from Marine Mapping for mooring=yes/ferry/cruise/guest/declaration but I am not clear that the values have received broad agreed or if they are the views of one contributor. Some of them certainly feel a bit flakey really. PeterIto 07:41, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

mooring balls?

I'm a bit confused. This tag seems to be exclusively for mooring to docks like this: http://www.rhode-island-boat-slips.com/images/b_dock.jpg

my question is how we are supposed to tag mooring balls and mooring fields? are there even tags for that? This kind of thing:

Sorry if I doesn't give a clear answer, but look at seamark:type=mooring, the seamark tagging scheme might seem complicated and confusing, but covers any object commonly found in nautical and boating maps. I am also not at all clear on how these should be tagged. I added a few with the little information I could glean from the seamark pages. e.g. https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/6587359402 But I'm not sure if this tagging is common or correct. Nate Wessel (talk) 14:08, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

mooring attachment types (on UK inland waterways)

On the UK's inland waterways, there are a few types of attachments:

• Rings
• Bollards
• Armco (connected using nappy pins)
• None (mooring pins must be hammered into the ground)

Is there a standard way of mapping these? If not, perhaps mooring:attachment_type=rings mooring:attachment_type=bollards mooring:attachment_type=armco mooring:attachment_type=none etc.?
