Relevance of this tag

Does this tag have any current meaning not realistically covered by smoking=no? Both mean 'completely smoke free'. In the original (abandoned) proposal this tag was documented, and the discussion there hints at some possible uses; but the tag is hardly used, and the documentation here does not really seem to lift it beyond smoking=no. As it stands it seems a bit pointless. --JeroenHoek (talk) 08:04, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

There doesn't seem to be a clear view on what this tag means. A reasonable guess is that smokefree=yes means that not only is smoking not allowed, there is also no chance of smoke drifting in from neighbouring facilities or smokers nearby (a sort of guarantee of clean air). On the talk-page of the original discussion it was seen as a mark of hospitality for facilities that are smoke free as part of their philosophy or branding. As it stands the meaning of this little used tag is rather vague and confusing. I am documenting it as such to prevent mappers from applying it 'just to be sure'. If someone wants to take ownership of this tag and flesh it out to something concrete, the ten year old discussion on the abandoned proposal's talk page may help as well. Otherwise, considering it deprecated in favour of smoking=no may be best. --JeroenHoek (talk) 07:11, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
This tag was documented on tourism=camp_site instead of smoking=*. Some of its use probably stems from there. --JeroenHoek (talk) 07:37, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
