Transitional Procedures (until rendered properly).
Until Mapnik, at least, renders this key, what is the best practice for dealing with areas (like a central reservation tagged landuse=forest) that have been misdescribed to get a particular presentational effect? -- Hadw (talk) 07:16, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
- To be clear, this Landcover page is not documenting a key called "landcover". It's a "Feature Page" documenting several tags/keys. So in relation to this page, there's nothing that Mapnik will be transitioning to
- To answer your question about a reservation tagged landuse=forest : If it is not forest (not a tree covered area), then it should definitely not have the forest tag on it. Not sure what tag it should have. Maybe boundary=protected_area looped around the whole area, with the name set. Then I imagine within that area, you'd map the areas of forest, and areas of scrubland etc with different ways having different tags. If that gets really fiddly, and the area is mostly forest, then it's a reasonable thing for somebody slap on a landuse=forest tag around the whole area, and it would be reasonable for you to work on refining that at this stage. If there's little or no forest there, then that was a mistake which should be fixed. Be bold in setting the tag to something more correct, even if it doesn't render as nicely.

Missing taxonomy
Note that one more standard taxonomy here described could be considered for land cover
What is the point of describing here NLCD92 and LCCS?
I propose to delete these sections.

- There may be some use in seeing how these classifications can fit into the different system used by Openstreetmap. I've gone through and updated the top table to show how each landcover in NLCD92 is currently tagged in Openstreetmap - and there isn't any issue with trees or grass - these both have multiple tags that imply this landcover. --Jeisenbe (talk) 03:23, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
