Using GPS?
Is the existing openmap data what's been done using gps where it worked? I thought some GPS devices weren't so affected by urban canyoning, I have a 32 channel reciever that is supposidly good.
I kind of wanted this mapping weekend to be a chance for me to possibly get into mapping for the project because so far I have only got to recording tracks and seeing a line created in VisualGPS. As the GPS content of this weekend seems rather watered down maybe I could combine noting street names with Geocaching.

- Most of the existing data in central london is guessed at from the GPS data... anything added recently is probably done from tracing the aerial imagery. The problem with GPS data in London is that it's often very inaccurate even when you get a lock, and the existing GPS data can be confusing -- I've been correcting stuff by tweaking to the aerial imagery in the applet.
- If you happen to have an uber-GPS that can cope, then that's brilliant. By far the easiest way of noting street names and features is to take pictures of them and sync them with a GPS trace to find where they were -- there's no way my GPS will cope though, so I'll be using the "annotate an aerial photo" technique. -- User:Randomjunk

Many people arriving via tube, might be worth linking to the Missing Stations on the Tube Stations page.

Map areas
The map at the bottom of this page shows different areas numbered, but higher up the area numbers are different for area 6/7. Is that a mistake? Looks like South of the river has been less interesting to map in the past. Does that mean the mapping party should focus more on that area, or less? - Yeh, areas 6 and 7 have been transposed in the table by mistake. Can you edit that or else I will do it later today? Party is focussed on trying to do all congestion zone. But yes someone needs to go to those sectors and fill in much detail (pref someone with GPS giving good signal, although Y! imagery can be used). Steve8 10:41, 26 Jan 2007 (UTC)
