Mountain Bike Trails
I've been doing most of the initial mapping of numerous significant mountain bike systems here in Michigan (NTN 12041018 12041018 / 12098440 12098440, RAMBA 12425503 12425503, lots of SE Michigan) and something I'm concerned about is the use of highway=cycleway on many of them.
On Paths / Trails it's suggested that such trails be tagged as highway=path with bicycle=designated. I suggest that this be done for off-road natural surface trails where mountain bikes are allowed. If we use highway=cycleway we give these likely-rough natural surface trails the same as designation as a paved path. Since these trails are of a very different thing than a traditional bike path, they should be designated differently.
I bring this up because I've already seen issues had issues with commuter-type routes being directed through rough, steep, and twisty MTB trails because of the highway=cycleway designation, and it would be wise for us to avoid this as we best can. --C0nsumer 07:22, 07 Dec 2022 (America/Detroit)
