I don't think orienteering=pole is right; in my local parks the markers are affixed to existing features (existing fencepost, side of building etc.) rather than their own post driven into the ground. I'm using orienteering=marker for generality.

I agree, it's the marker on the post or pole (or building, fence etc) that is the orienteering thing, so I recommend adopting orienteering=marker and then using another tag such as marker=post if it's attached to a dedicated post, or marker=plate if it's attached to something with another function, such as a amenity=bench or a node of a linear or polygon feature such as a barrier=fence or building=yes.
