Talk:Oxford/Cyclox map 2009
Progress
There's been no activity on this page since March, so I've had a bit of a clearout. Anyone out there?--RichardMann 15:00, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
There's quite a lot of features on the OSM cycle map in the Oxford area, but it's all gone a bit quiet. Certain features don't have agreed ways of recording them, yet.
Problems
- Distinguishing between good and bad cycleways (lack of dropped kerbs, too narrow, cycle barriers). Can't agree whether to call bad ones "footways" or "cycleways".
- Showing cycle lanes on one side of the road only
- Other things that it would be nice to do if that had been sorted (eg indicating the pinchpoints on the main roads, such as under the railway bridge and Woodstock Road from Beech Croft Road to Leckford Road)
This means that we may have to expand the project to include creating our own electronic scalable map. Some of the features of the existing OSM cycle map may be quite hard to reproduce (such as the marking of cycle routes, and hill-shading), so this may cause as many problems as it solves.
Looking ahead a little... Imagine everything's mapped and we're happy with how OCM is showing it, what's next? Is there going to be a printed version? --Khickman 09:27, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Fix(es) Required
It's too far for me to come over and check, but it looks like there's a cycleway that needs joining to Parker Road, South Hinksey... http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/3366485 --Khickman 14:10, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
While casting around for examples of separate ways on bridges I couldn't help thinking Donnington Bridge "looks wrong" with the cycleway having it's own bridge. Having chewed over what to do with the A40 cycleways as they approach Wolvercote I can see the reasoning for doing that way - but it still "looks wrong". I see there's a proposed relation that might take care of it, can that be implemented now? --Khickman 14:10, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Local Cycle Network Routes
Most "quiet" routes have now (18th Feb 2009) appeared on the Oxford map. Quite a few cycle lanes have now been added on main roads, but not where there are only cycle lanes on one side of the road.--RichardMann 19:08, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
- The routes aim to show good quiet ways of getting around the city avoiding the traffic. This is a sort of distillation of local knowledge (which is why in OSM terms they can be justified as "mapping what's on the ground", even though most routes will only (so far) have intermittent signs, if any).--RichardMann 22:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Numbers have been added. Separately, we are hoping to get the County to improve the labelling on these routes.--RichardMann 15:00, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Pedestrian Crossings
The way to code these changed (it used to use the UK-specific bird/animal names). Now they should be:
Crossings at traffic lights
Crossings mid-block
Bollards/Barriers
It is useful to add these - especially cycle_barriers. They should be placed a little way back from the junction, if they only affect one path. If there's a gate but it's almost always open, or locked (with access round the side), then maybe barrier=entrance is a better bet if the route is unobstructed, barrier=cycle_barrier if you have to slow down.
