Wiki Cleanup

I am planning to do a bit of wiki clean-up for the Philippines project. I see in small areas some mapping activity for the Philippines. But the most extensive is in Metro Manila. Should we start breaking up the page into subpages on mapping status, intro to pinoy beginners, pinoy users, etc? Maning 10:55, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Can we clean this up a bit? I think this should be the main page of what we do in the Philippines. Currenlty, it a clutter of loose notes about everything and anythin on OSM philippines. A separate page perhaps about metromanila and other provinces, tagging conventions, and net stuff you do with the data. Maning

I've started cleaning/spicing it up. I'll probably work on breaking stuff out into their separate pages over the Christmas break. --07:50, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Eugene. I'm not really good at wiki editing but will also help here Maning 08:49, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

I proposed we move the Metro Manila city status to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Metro_Manila page Maning 06:44, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Done! --Seav 00:35, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Philippine slippy map

May I suggest we use the osmarender/t@h layer for the slippymap? You can't see much improvement at zoom 5-7 on mapnik because we don't have much trunks and motorways. Maning 06:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Proposed subpages or sections

  • Where are we mapping (the mapping status section)
  • Guide to mapping (for Pinoy specific thingies tagging tips etc, for other things link to relevant wikipages)
  • Previous and planned activities (mapping events, talks, etc)
  • Cool stuff you can do
    • GPS ready maps
    • Mobile phones
    • samples of Pinoy website using OSM data

Rethinking the main wikiproject page

Right now the page, while having an attractive header, is a mish-mash of various stuff. I think we need to rethink what content and what level of detail needs to be included to make the main page not too overwhelming. I'll list below my ideas and thoughts to serve as a whiteboard.

  • The main wikiproject page is targeted mainly for two audiences: mappers and heavy data re-users. Casual users, of the stick-a-map-to-my-website kind, should be directed to the openstreetmap.org.ph website, but they can be linked to the various user-oriented wiki pages if needed.
  • The main page should only give an overview of various things. The details should be farmed out to (sub)pages.
  • Here are the bits of info that might be good for the main page broken down by target audience:
    • Both
      • Intro and link to the openstreetmap.org.ph website and talk-ph mailing list
      • Events (mapping parties, conferences, meetups, lectures, etc.); main page should not display all events but only the upcoming and most recent ones.
      • Mentions in the media (news articles, PR articles, blog posts from third parties [not OSMers])
      • Articles by OSMers (link to categories/tag pages, etc.)
      • Roster of members; summary -> full list should be in a separate page
      • OSM-PH non-profit
    • Mappers
      • Mapping conventions
        • Map features ph page link
        • PH tagwatch
      • Mapping status
      • Major mapping milestones
      • Imports
      • Quality assurance tools / clean-ups
        • Openstreetbug link
        • keepright link
    • Users
      • How to use data (extracts)
      • Garmin maps by maning
      • Filipino websites that use OSM map tiles/data
  • The list of stuff above is quite long and might overwhelm the main page. Maybe some of them can be grouped and a summary can just be written for the main page linking to appropriate (sub)pages.

Please proceed. I think we are on the same page thinking that the main page should provide only major highlights of the PH project. Will comment on other sections later. Maning 10:12, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

The header of this page looks good for us to adopt. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Victoria%2C_Australia Maning 09:09, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Update (Feb 2010)

I think that it is better to deemphasize the focus on users for the PH wiki pages and concentrate more on info for the mapping community. I see a possible redundancy in having the same information in both the wiki and the openstreetmap.org.ph site. I think the .org.ph website should be a PR-driven site for promoting OpenStreetMap in the Philippines, whether to get new mappers (who will then get involved in the main OSM site, the wiki, and the talk-ph mailing list) or to provide info and help for consumers of OSM Philippine data.

So by going on a more community-based focus for the wiki pages, the following are important sections to have:

  • Events and Mapping Parties - links to calendar of activities, wiki pages for planning future events, wiki pages for documenting past events, etc.
  • Mapping conventions - conventions specific to the Philippines. Pages here should naturally link to international tagging guidelines as appropriate
  • Mapping status - documenting current status of mapping and highlighting of milestones
  • Data sources - documenting already imported data, potential sources of data, PH-specific aerial imagery, and guidelines for importing
  • Quality assurance - info specific to the Philippines for verifying data. But maybe this can be under Mapping status since the status should also mention data quality
  • Members - List of members

The other pages or info listed in the section above can be linked as peripheral info (like in a sidebar of a website or as an aside in an article). For example, the current placement of the Feature images is like this.

I'll think about this some more.

Where do I suggest a featured image?

Maning 08:13, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Philippines/Featured images and WikiProject Philippines/Featured images/Nominations are the pertinent pages. :-) --seav 18:20, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Review of admin_level (proposals)

I would like to propose that the admin level of

  • Barangay be raised from 10(smallest division) to 8
  • That Pukok be included as 9
  • And that Sitio be included as level 10
    • Or Sitio & other with a note added.

Important:

This would have take effect after a bot-search/replace for any current places tagged of 8 - 10

--Chief Mike 14:03, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

But 8 is already occupied by zones, which at least Pasay, Manila, and Caloocan have. Also, 10 is not necessarily the smallest unit. Germany and the Netherlands specify up to level 11. --seav 14:33, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Ok the table/chart says zones admin_level=9.
So then how about I move the chart's block down on the page to countries with 11 admin levels leave 8-10 as current & mark 11 as follows
adm_level=11
  ========
  "Proposed"
    Purok
    Sitio
   Kagawad
    other

and wait for some more feedback/consensus then I'll remove(or anyone-else can) the word proposed there-in.
I'm mostly concerned with the software's rendering of small boundaries inside of larger boundaries not sure how many people watch this talk page vs watch/read the Tag:boundry= page--Chief Mike 12:28, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Oh yeah. Zones are at level 9. I stand corrected. Sitios/puroks are actually proposed to be at level 12. (Why 12? There's a strong even-number bias for admin_level values and the strict LGUs are on even numbers: province=4, city/municipality=6, barangay=10) See this email thread at the mailing list. I haven't seen any actual boundaries for any sitio/purok so admin_level=12 is currently theoretical. That's why the info is at the main table and not at the extended table. --seav 14:48, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
