Street Naming Conventions

I have noticed that street name nomenclature does not seem to be consistent across the Portland map.

I have seen the full name for the "town section". For example: Northeast I have also seen the abbreviated version. For example: NE

Which one is preferred for OpenStreetMap and why?

• We write out the full-name "Northeast" and not "NE". Generally abbreviations are avoided in OpenStreetMap. Data consumers can always convert "Northeast" to "NE" for their purposes, but going the other way around is problematic as you could mean any number of things including "New England" --Dobratzp (talk) 22:48, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
