no proposal needed
I think we do not need a proposal here, all tags should be spelled in British English. I'd simply add a hint to the tag page. --Dieterdreist (talk) 17:47, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Spelling of the value part of the tag?
Copied from Talk:Tag:shop=jewelry
In the shop=jewellery versus shop=jewelry spelling debate, the chiefly US usage of "jewelry" has been chosen for the proposal on this page.
- Why? This flies in the face of the conventions of OSM. The shop should be described, not what is sold there and British English is used where there are other variants. IMO the tag should be shop=jewellers. A jewellers shop sells jewellery, but does a lot more too. They trade in precious metals that are not jewellery and they repair and service items such as clocks and watches. This is an invalid tag. It has already led to misguided people running bots changing valid tags to shop=jewelry. Chillly 15:57, 22 September 2010 (BST)
Not worth it
It's simply not worth it to change the spelling of a well-established tag. By well-established, I mean not only with a considerable number of uses, but being used by a number of services (at the very least in the editors). When you change a tag, you have to change all the servuces that use this tag. --Jgpacker (talk) 10:30, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- I agree. Established tags have higher priority than BE/AmE considerations. --Fkv (talk) 16:21, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- I disagree. We, as a project, need to be able to fix mistakes, no matter how big or small. And forgetting to apply the BE convention may not be critical, but it is a mistake. Of course any change right now is painful because we lack clear processes to deal with changing tags. But this would be as good an opportunity as any to implement effective communication of changes in our tagging model to application maintainers. --Tordanik 10:56, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
