Proposal

Great idea. I always searched for such a tag that allows a great variety of crafts, using shop always seemed wrong to me. Would be great if you could create a proposal to spread the usage of this tag. --Scai 21:06, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

When you want to push that in proposal-direction?

I thought of adding some kind of tagging for crafts, too - so I appreciated your idea. Currently I miss

• translations for the values ;)
• examples

In the german page of the original user page we added translations, but as I'm no native speaker I can't really explain all of the values, but I'll try to explain some of them. What kind of extra examples do you refer to? MaZderMind 20:22, 24 August 2010 (BST)

Additionally I would like to include a proposed way to combine craft=* and shop=*, while that often is not distinguishable. Let's take a bicycle shop for example: I would tag it shop=bicycle Most bicycle shops additionally repair bikes, what's kind of a craft. A bike-shop repairing bikes is not a craft in my eyes. A bike shop that builds bikes from customer selected parts would be. That's what the clause "producing or processing customized goods" tries to express. Do you think this should be made more clear? MaZderMind 20:22, 24 August 2010 (BST)

When is a craft a trade?

The above suggestion relating to bicycle shops, most of which offer both new bikes and repair services, illustrates that it isn't always easy to say when to use craft or shop. A lot of the values you have given overlap with shop values, for example a bakery, butcher, computer shop, gardening, hairdresser, optician and shoes. If this proposal is to work I think you need to take a lot of those values out and more clearly (1) why and (2) how you make this distinction. TomChance 09:25, 24 August 2010 (BST)

i tried to clearify by adding a clause "Places, that are widely accepted as shops, should not be transformed to crafts". I also added a sentence about the possible dual use of craft and shop, if both of them applies. MaZderMind 20:22, 24 August 2010 (BST)

To me, a shop is a place where you can buy goods and a craft is a place where you can buy man power and hire people to do something for you. But I agree that there needs to be a clearer distinction at the tag page.--Scai 16:01, 25 August 2010 (BST)

Deprecation?

Does this tag deprecate man_made=works, or intended to be used with it

summary of tags about production and selling

Here is my vision of some tags:

• man_made=works — mass production of goods
• shop=* — selling goods produced by man_made=works
• craft=* — individual production of customized goods; may be used togeter with man_made=works if production is in a significant-sized industrial plant.

Description not precise

The definition is given as "A place producing or processing customised goods". Although I like this proposal and the example values, I don't think that this is a good definition, as it doesn't fit for many of the examples. For example, nothing is produced at a craft=painter. Instead, you call them, and they come to your home and "produce or process" the paint there. I think craft=painter is fine, but we need a clear definition and description that also cover such kinds of services. --Head 15:33, 16 September 2010 (BST)
