Sport key

I think this should be an extention to sport=*. See Sport.

I don't know, but I wouldn't call a fitness centre a sport, I'd rather call it an amenity, as long as it's not an athlete club. Kstaden 18:51, 28 March 2012 (BST)

sport=* may surely be extended if it doesn't have needed items, but sport=* may not be used as a POI, as it's just a property for real POIs. --AMDmi3 (talk) 20:28, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

key leisure not amenity

I think this tag belongs into leisure=*, not amenity=*. Maybe in combination with sport=fitness. Currently there are 41 uses of leisure=fitness_centre and 342 uses of sport=fitness. --Scai 12:17, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

I second. The tag is actually close to leisure=sports_centre, it may roughly be described as a very small variant of it, so it should go into the same category (leisure=*). Also, centre (as opposed to center) spelling is used in OSM, so key value should be changed as well. Thirded. leisure=sports_centre does not feel right at all for the kind of small, members-only fitness clubs I see every day. Additionally, the sport=* key has no really good match for "fitness" anyway. And the spelling of "centre" does matter. --Jolter (talk) 23:26, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

British english. centre not center

Defining gym

I'm guessing there is resistance here because they don't have private gyms / fitness centers / health clubs in Britain? A place, often a business, usually membership-based, where you go and use fitness or workout equipment (treadmill, stationary bike, nautilus, etc.), take exercise classes (Tae Bo, Pilates, etc.), maybe swim, maybe use a sauna or steam room, maybe even a tanning booth, then shower and go on about your day. Kind of surprising, you'd think Bally's / LA / 24 Hour Fitness would have conquered the world by now. They're certainly trying to conquer every town in the US! In any case, I'm going to have at least a half dozen increasingly common and popular (and sought-out as many are membership-based) amenity points to mark in just my town that I can't properly mark as what they are. - KTyler 05:55, 18 May 2012 (BST)

You're right. There is an issue around the definition of the word "gym". Not because of british people, but because non-native english speakers get confused between "gym" as in fitness centre, and "gym" as in "gymnasium". See Gym / Fitness centre#Ambiguity of the word gym. Now as it happens this particular proposal actually avoids that problem. It avoids the word "gym" in the tag. In my opinion that is a good thing, however I would reject this proposal due to those first two problems.
