Proposal talk:Escape lane

Is this proposal still active? If so I would like to second the proposal. The area I am currently mapping has a number of tall mountains that US Interstates I-75 and I-24 traverse, and there are a number of runaway truck lanes along both highways.

I will also add myself to this supportive list. These escape lanes are important features to tag, and you will thank that information in case you're driving downhill and your brakes fade, navigation systems can tell drivers something like: "Escape lane 500 metres ahead". highway=service + service=escape_lane

I support this proposal, but about tagging I prefer Craig's suggestion in mailing list:
I think this is just a special type of service road, so would be best tagged as highway=service, plus something like service=escape_lane.
Plus appropriate tags for surface= and access= etc.
According to Taginfo, service=escape_lane is already used 87 times.
I think this is better than inventing a new highway tag, which won't be understood by any software / renderers etc.

Can't we just add new rendering options? I firmly think that highway=service is not the best way to tag a road which is not intended to be driven, furthermore, an access limitation is not a very precise option, but I can see nobody supports my point of view, sooner or later we will have to change this. --Schumi4ever 14:25, 13 October 2012 (BST)

I agree with Viking81, this is NOT a service road: try once, you will stay there. Highway=escape is clean, short and that's it. I guess someone could change in bulk the existing (and not rendered yet) service=escape_lane into highway=escape. --Cordialement, gerdami 18:11, 13 October 2012 (BST)

I guess you're right, if we know there are 87 service=escape_lane (Which are not that many), we can also know where are them and change them, it can't be that difficult. I favour highway=escape on the basis that this really is a (special) class of highway, not of service, and a potentially life or death important class, so intuitively should be differentiated at the highest level. Rendering will need to change in due course, but currently these can be rendered in almost anyway and not be misleading, as they are short dead-end roads. --Qurm 10:23, 20 November 2012 (BST)

Types of escape lanes

I like your proposal and I will vote for it. I think that highway=escape could be the most simply form to denominate the tag. I have seen in Wikipedia that there are different types of escape lanes. Unfortunately, I've not noticed the addition of a "type" key before the voting. But as explained on the Key:type page, that key is used for relation types in the overwhelming number of cases and should be avoided for anything else. Said page also suggests two alternative naming schemes for "type" subkeys, is there a reason not to switch to one of them? --Tordanik 18:36, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

What about tagging?

Although I have posted two possible different ways of rendering the escape lanes, maybe there is someone out there who has a better idea than mine. Or maybe most of you like the red-white or red-yellow option. In any case, please let me know so we can decide if red on yellow or red on white is better. --Schumi4ever 22:51, 20 October 2012 (BST)

When will the voting be finished?

It allready is finished as you said, but If we want to strictly follow the "rule" : Proposal_process#Approved_or_rejected (is approved) if there are 6 unanimous approval votes or at least 15 total votes with a majority approval

It means we are short of 3 votes. And the procedure recommends to extend the voting period by an additionnal 2 weeks + new mail for voting. sletuffe 13:41, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
