Proposal talk:Trafficability
Usage of opening_hours=*
There is a proposal (Proposed_features/vehicletesting), in which opening_hours=* is proposed for the trafficability. - But I would not like the usage of opening_hours=* for this. --LordOfMaps (talk) 12:20, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Opening hours carry a different kind of information. It has something to do with permission whereas trafficability is about the physical conditions. A testing road can have opening hours from 6 to 12, whereas the trafficability would be "winter". Furthermore many ice roads don't have opening hours at all. So these types of information are independent and should consequently be tagged independently. --BGNO (talk) 13:36, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Usage of winter_road=* and ice_road=*
winter_road=* and ice_road=* are approved tags for roads, which are only passable in winter. - But I would prefer a more general tag like trafficability=*. --LordOfMaps (talk) 12:27, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Be aware that some ice roads are not only passable in winter, for example ice roads which are close to the poles. So it makes sense to be specific about the trafficability. The tag "ice_road=yes" contains information about the surface and composition, whereas the trafficability tells about the condition under which a traffic way can be used.
- (Anyway, I don't like the term "ice road" because a path can be on ice too.) --BGNO (talk) 13:18, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
New possible value
A case for a new value could be: snow melting in the mountain, which flooded a footpath through a dry or small river. --MasiMaster (talk) 13:52, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
Name
"trafficability" is not a commonly-understood word: I'm a native British English speaker and a writer by profession, and I've never encountered it. "passage" would be simpler - i.e. the conditions under which passage is possible. --Richard (talk) 10:11, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Not serviced in winter
It can be useful for roads which are not serviced in winter (and not passable). However there seems to be used (but not documented) winter_service=*

Use conditional restrictions ?
Trafficability not only depends on the type of vehicle but also on how the vehicle is equipped and how experienced the driver is. Instead of creating a completely new tag, it might be better to apply conditional restrictions to existing tags that identify the road surface. Here are some different examples how a road that is only passable during wintertime could be tagged:
- surface=mud: most of the year, the surface is just muddy and difficult to pass. surface:conditional=snow@winter: during wintertime, in this very snowy area there is usually snow on the road and there are no snowploughs in operation.
- surface:grade=0: most of the year, the road is almost unpassable. surface:grade:conditional=2@winter: during wintertime, this road is quite ok for a car.
Of course, the problem will be to find out whether it's wintertime or not when the tag is evaluated. Is October already wintertime or does it only start in December? --Biff (talk) 19:36, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
