Talk:Raster tile providers
Is there a a valid reason to keep this page separate from page Tiles and use magic includes? To edit Tiles I needed to google " http://otile1.mqcdn.com/tiles/1.0.0/sat/7/63/42.jpg" to find Tile servers because meaning of {{:Tile servers}} is certainly not obvious). - I also thought of merging those two wiki pages ... maybe we need a closer look what and how many other wiki pages link to each one. --Stephan75 (talk) 17:19, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Tile URLs
The tile URLs are problematic for a number of reasons:
- Having them as clickable links means you need to right-click to copy the address, instead of just selecting text as is a more common method of copying.
- Anybody clicking the links (for example because they didn't read the note all the way at the bottom of the table) will cause useless hits to the tile servers.
- Webbrowsers (at least Chrome) encode URLs, which means you will actually copy "%7Bz%7D" instead of "{z}".
- Is the "$" in front of the variable common? I know JOSM doesn't use it, and Leaflet doesn't. There should be an explanation that the "$" isn't part of the URL.

Isn't the format without the "$" way more common? Perhaps that should be listed in all the URLs. Right now it's a mix which adds to the confusion. In addition to JOSM and Leaflet, QGIS and OpenMap-Java use the `.../{z}/{x}/{y}.png` URL format. I've never seen it used any other way. Which frameworks require to enter "$" symbols in the URL?

- Just a heads up that the points are solved / fixed as of today. --Opk12 (talk) 09:13, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Help Question
See https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/62490/update-changes-in-blackwhite-tile-map . Would it be possible to add more information to each line (and also answer that help question)?.
ipv6
Is ipv6 support really important/useful to note, especially with so prominent rendering? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:37, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
In my opinion it definitely is. I've had to manually search through all the domains to check if they support IPv6 (which definitely is important in 2019..). fblaese 10:39, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
Wikimedia tiles aren't working

- Wikimedia Maps is not listed anymore. Public usage was disabled in 2020, per announcement and Phabricator ticket, and is now prohibited by the Terms of Use. --Opk12 (talk) 09:11, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
