powerlines necessary
I was wondering. Is it necessary to have the powerlines and things in there. Could we just delete those to make the map less cluttered? This is a street map project correct?
Just wanted to ask before I started deleting away!
User:Sphyg 14:15, 18 November 2009
- No don't delete them.
- This is not just a street map project no (despite the name) We map all kinds of things beyond just streets. Pretty much anything you can imagine in fact, not just features which get rendered on the map. Anything appearing on Map Features and any other ideas conforming to our Good practice and tagging guidelines. Read more about power lines in these tag docs: Tag:power=line
- Now power lines are a bit messy when working with TIGER data, particularly where they are drawn with duplicate nodes over a road. Try not to get too distracted by them, but it's usually best to move the power line nodes off to one side of the road to make things less confusing (so that the way just crosses the road without any overlapping node things going on). Does that make sense?

okay, what about driveways in rural areas? - User:Sphyg 02:55, 19 November 2009
- yep. Don't delete them either. We don't generally delete data. We add it :-)
- You might have a TIGER situation where the roads are so badly misaligned from the Yahoo imagery, that you can't figure out what goes where and so deleting and re-mapping is necessary. But if you have to do this, and then re-sketching some bits of the road layout from Yahoo, this has the major disadvantage that you would lose the names of the roads.
- But yes we keep the rural driveways if possible.

okay, but that's just nonsense. Why does anybody, except the person who live there, need to know the driveway route. Should we change them to tracks at least so they are dotted lines, instead of looking like streets on the map?
- The persons visiting, delivery trucks (as in "can i take my 18 wheeler all the way or must I unload at the gate"), rescue services, other officials, statisticians (median driveway length per postal code anyone?), infrastructure planners, ... Add a an access=private to the section which is off limits to passersby, then it will get a red overstrike highlight and thus appear different from other, "proper" streets. Alv 07:12, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
I am a delivery personnel, and I find these driveways useless. I mean, personally, how am I going to know if you're 18 wheeler will fit or not. That is something a map can't tell you. Trees grow a little everyday. So today you may fit, but tomorrow you may get scratches. Or maybe rain is weighing down the trees. I just think the driveways clutter up the map with useless information. Sphyg 06:39, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Then you're free to setup a rendering that draws the map without any highway=service, service=driveway roads. Ways tagged so already appear only at the highest zoom levels. OSM is not primarily about the Main page map, but about the data behind it. You could even add 18-wheeler=yes on all one lane roads you know you could drive down. (or even use your expertise to think which all kinds of semi-trailers would "always" be able to use the same narrow driveways and use separate tags for each of them). Alv 10:55, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
okay. I'll leave the data there, even though I don't like it. I realize that this is a project much bigger than what I like or not. Thanks for the input. Sphyg 04:50, 2 December 2009
Offline at the moment
SO is someone going to manage the tiger edited map since it isn't being upheld by matt? User:Sphyg 21:23, 12 December 2009
- Not sure what's wrong exactly but I guess the guys back at CloudMade have switched off Matt's sandbox space, not realising that it was serving this map. Maybe you should email them about it ( support AT cloudmade.com ) but I think Matt is probably looking into it. Or maybe he is looking into setting this up again on the OSM dev server. -- Harry Wood 22:48, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- An unfortunate development, certainly. --Ceyockey 19:25, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
Too much red in US
As discussed on the mailing list(s), in the US at least, the map shows far too much red because it includes all ways edited by the balrog-kun bot, instead of recognizing that those ways may have been edited by a human previously. I'm worried that this contributes to the mistaken idea that nobody is editing the US, which is very much not the case. We suggested the correct logic to use. Will there be a fix? - Which mailing list? archive link? You might try posting this request to developer.mapquest.com forums, although they haven't done my super-simple suggestion yet. Guess they're busy. -- Harry Wood 13:24, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
- Talk-us, in the TIGER2010 thread in December. e.g. http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-us/2010-December/004983.html . I sent them an email, and I'll try another contact I have if that doesn't work. AM909 23:00, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- Marking any ways that are not tagged tiger:edited=no as changed should be easy and help a lot. --Lyx 01:37, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- You meant tiger:reviewed=no. That gets handled by the suggested version number comparison anyway. I pinged MapQuest and received the response "Our open team says, 'the enhancement goes live on Tuesday'". This presumably means 2011-01-18. AM909 21:21, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Refresh schedule
How frequently does the map refresh? User:Ponzu 06:16, 21 April 2011
- Distant Zoom levels (8-14) usually refresh within 48-72 hours; Closer zoom levels (15-18) usually refresh within 12-36 hours. - User:Skorasaurus 4 November 2011
- That response presumably pertains to the earlier version of the map hosted by MapQuest. Same question for the current ITO Map version. How often is it updated? Someone's written "This map was last updated in September 2012". Is that true? (or maybe "updated" means... colour/code changes).
- OK I'll do a test bit of TIGER fixup. If it's never being updated, then these roads will stay orange even though I just edited them (but hopefully they'll turn blue after a week or something)
- -- Harry Wood (talk) 02:02, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- As far as I can see it updates every few weeks; that's still a lot more frequent than zoom level 12 on www.openstreetmap.org standard rendering. Zoom level 12 is another way to find unedited TIGER data: If you see a spider web of thin grey lines (= residential roads) all over rural areas, you are probably looking at a TIGER desert. --Lyx (talk) 09:29, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention so I cannot confirm how long it took to update, but coming back 6 months later, my sample patch has now turned a bit blue.
- "every few weeks" sounds good. I mean it sounds a lot better than "This map was last updated in September 2012". This is clearly a misleading sentence on the page. I have removed it and added a section on "Refresh schedule". If you know more, feel free to add more details on when and how often it updates.

zoomed out overview
Both MapQuest & ITO world's TIGER Edited Maps do not provide low zoom levels to give a nice zoomed out overview. Someone else (like me) could tackle this issue, by generating low zoom tiles by half scaling. I'll get to it at some point -- Harry Wood 01:24, 1 September 2012 (BST)
