Does this actually render on OSM Carto? It doesn't seem to for the ones I can see in overpass. --InsertUser (talk) 14:39, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- Of course not. This is a new tag and not yet much used. --Hufkratzer (talk) 19:36, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- It doesn't. I don't know how to go about that, but I've moved it out of the infobox. B-unicycling (talk) 23:30, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
Corrals
animal_hitch=corral
Would it be reasonable to extend this to the more "loosely tethered" sort of hitch, the corral? I am specifically thinking of the generally square bits of fencing a few meters on each side with a gate at one end found at some trailheads and campgrounds. There was a store nearby that had a fenced area for customer dogs once, so there's more applications to the idea. The horse_parking proposal had this idea marked as "box", but I would suggest the use of the more common term "corral". --Valhikes (talk) 14:14, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- The name of the tag clearly says it is a tag for something to hitch animals to, so I don't think it's a good idea to use it for things that have nothing to do with hitching. animal_hitch=corral would look like a troll tag to me. Theoretically, there can be hitching rings or rails within a corral (although I don't remember seeing anything like that).
- As you have mentioned in your blog post How to tag a corral? the OSM wiki describes a tag combination landuse=animal_keeping + animal_keeping:type=paddock, and recently someone added "corral" there as a synonym for "paddock". You didn't use that because you didn't know what a "paddock" was. Yes, it seems "paddock" is not much used in the US ([1]). But are you sure British/European mappers know what a corral is? Why haven't they used man_made=corral to map corrals, if they knew? In Germany what you call "corral" would rather be called "paddock". Maybe some tag xxx=animal_enclosure would be preferable to "paddock" or "corral" because it is not specific to any region.
- It seems you want to have different tags for smaller corrals/paddocks ("a few meters on each side") and larger ones. Why do we need that? We also don't have different tags for smaller and larger pitches, or for shorter and longer bridges. The size can be seen on the map.

- People will sometimes hitch an animal to the rails of a corral, but it is not the intended method for confining an animal with the amenity. The sense that it is a hitch is certainly moving toward the abstract.
- These suggested tags are for farms and ranches? The following paragraph expresses doubt these are the correct tags. I am not trying to map private land details. Given what else is tagged this way, it does not seem conducive to helping people find this particular amenity.
- Corral is in the Cambridge dictionary, but 'especially in North America'. Pen? Box, even if it is a little odd?
- I want different tags because they are distinctly different things. One is an amenity found at specialized campsites and trailheads. It is generally just a small fenced area with some additions for feeding. The other is for gathering stock herds and is a larger and more elaborate structure, with working chutes and loading chutes. In the right circumstances, one might be usable for the other, but it is not ideal.
- To say 'no, it is too great an abstraction' is fine. --Valhikes (talk) 06:57, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Corrals and paddocks can be on private land and/or near farms and ranches; this book from an American horse trainer contains the sentence: "My chores consisted mainly of feeding, watering, and cleaning up after the twenty or so horses that stayed in the corrals and paddocks up near the barn." If they are on public land, why not simply add access=yes, to make them easier to find (this can also be used in combination with amenity=animal_hitch). --Hufkratzer (talk) 10:28, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
