What tags to use instead of "gym"

I've laid out exactly why the word "gym" is ambiguous/confused with photos. Now all we need to do is decide, and more clearly state what the best tag is for the two different things which might be refered to as a "gym". Currently the top bit of the page lists some other tags, but it's not very clear. -- Harry Wood 01:50, 14 June 2012 (BST)

None of your examples are very good, though. People say here (Canada) that they're going to the gym, so that's what I tag 'em. Confusingly, community centres here mean (almost) exclusively hockey. The sport= namespace isn't ideal, as gyms/fitness clubs/whatever aren't competitive. I agree that none of these examples are good and I don't see any more appropriate tag to use for gyms (as in places to lift weights and run on a treadmill). Unless anybody has a good reason not to, I'm soon going to remove the "Don't use" from the title of this page. TristanA (talk) 16:53, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm German so I might not speak the best English, but looking into a dictionary gives me sports hall for a building with a sports field in it and fitness center for the ones where you could lift weights or use ergometers. Why not use those and avoid the confusing gym at all? --MrEnglish (talk) 10:08, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

"Non of your examples are very good". Well I've given examples of two different types of thing which might be called a "gym". What is not very good about them? You've gone on to talk about tags, and so I think what you mean is the tagging documentation at the top of the page is not very good. ...This I would agree with. Well it's what I said above.

How do you get to the conclusion that it's therefore a good idea to use the tag amenity=gym? The page examples (lower down) set out pretty clearly why this is ambiguous.

Maybe it would be clearer if we did what we did for sport=football (another ambiguous word). That page is redirected to Football. Maybe this page should be redirected "Gym"

Page title

Perhaps this page should be moved out of the "Tag" namespace like sport=football. It's more of a disambiguator than a tag description page. Mrwojo (talk) 01:39, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

I've been doing some consolidation work. Until today the main content of this page was my clear description of the "gym" ambiguity problem. But that's really only part of the problem. I've now moved that content onto a section Gym / Fitness centre#Ambiguity of the word gym, and this is now linked as one of the two different reasons why this is a bad tag to use. One reason why I've arranged things this way, is because of a new proposal Proposed features/leisure=gym (gah! Same problem!)

The other thing I just did was to blow away the top section of this page where there was a fairly spurious collection of links to different tags. I think we should give clear advice here on what tag people should use instead of amenity=gym, but for now I think the best thing to do is channel all attention and discussion to the Gym / Fitness centre page, where all the options can be described even-handedly.
