Possible Payment Methods
A traditional telephone want to be feeded with cois before you can use it (except for emergency calls). Some newer telephones accept banknotes, phone cards (usually country/operator dependant), ATM bank cards (e.g. EC/Maestro) or even credit cards.
A possible solution for collecting such properties of a telephone would be:
- payment:coins = yes/no
- payment:banknotes = yes/no
- payment:credit_cards = yes/no
- payment:phone_card = yes/no
- payment:maestro_card = yes/no

- Very good idea. I'll use this in future. -- Serpens 19:13, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
This is a germany public telephone without any payment option. It maybe no emergency=phone because you can also call 0800 numbers and R calls can lead. In what way it should be tagged? User 5359 07:30, 29 August 2011 (BST)
Telephone situation
There are also a telephone without box, covered, boxed, barrier-free boxed (for wheelchair ) etc. I propose to add to amenity=telephone
- situation=boxed
- situation=covered
- situation=unwrapped
- situation=barrier-free_boxed

Internet Access
Some payphones in Germany offer internet access. I think that it would be useful to include this information and would propose to tag it as
internet:yes
free call only
I have seen several phone "cells" in all over germany which allow only free calls like R-Calls and 0800-numbers. How to tag them? -- Malenki 15:55, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Booth types
Fans of urban furniture may like to use the booth tag:
- booth=k2 / k6 records the type of telephone booth e.g. types of red telephone box

Non-functional / Ornamental
Some of the red telephone boxes in rural parts of the UK have been left just as the K6 booth. They have no functional telephone and are just ornamental/iconic. How should these be tagged?

Telephone lines. Telephone poles.
All I know is
- There are set conventions for marking electric power lines. There are set conventions for marking electric power poles.
- There are no set conventions for marking telephone lines. There are no set conventions for marking telephone poles.
Maybe in the big city you don't see them, but in the country they may be the only features for miles.
Please somebody make some. Jidanni (talk) 01:54, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Telephone Unicodes
We observe some handy symbols that might be useful on maps.
$ unicode --max 333 telephone| perl -nwle 'next unless $_;$u=$_ if /^U\+/; print "$_ $u" if (length $_) < 4;' ℡ U+2121 TELEPHONE SIGN ⌕ U+2315 TELEPHONE RECORDER ☎ U+260E BLACK TELEPHONE ☏ U+260F WHITE TELEPHONE ✆ U+2706 TELEPHONE LOCATION SIGN

US/CA border crossing check-in video phones
I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on how to tag the following: Along the US /Canadian border, in the great lakes at least, many marinas have these little video phones that allow you to call the country's immigration/border-patrol people to report that you've crossed the border. You have to show them your face and your passport and they ask you the usual questions. If you cross the border by boat, it's legally required that you check in with one of these phones, so it seems important to have them on the map. But they're also not quite telephones for the use of the general public in the sense that this tag seems intended for. And they only call one place. Any guidance on this would be appreciated! Removing public telephones in Belgium
I've found out about Automated Edits code of conduct afterward, and since it's a removal, I think it's a good idea to mention it here anyway: by mid 2015, all public telephones in Belgium - managed by Proximus (former Belgacom) were removed. So I removed the remaining amenity=telephone by searching them with an overpass query (limited to Belgium with (area:3600052411)) (source: [1]), changesets: 45973843 & 45974363. Telephones not getting rendered: causes
If the telephone does not get rendered, that is because it is too close to certain other objects. [2] Jidanni (talk) 01:42, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- In OSM Carto, is is the general case that two icons cannot be rendered in the same place, i.e. one blocks the other. It is pointless to annotate this behaviour at any feature that could have an icon. --Polarbear w (talk) 10:04, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
