Why not use barrier=retaining_wall instead?

A haha appears to be a type of retaining wall, which happens to be next to a ditch barrier. This could be mapped with a combination of barrier=retaining_wall possibly next to a barrier=ditch or man_made=embankment. --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:58, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

It's a good question. (I just made the page a bit more standard since it looked like a joke or a hoax originally.) This tag could be of interest to someone who might want to make a detailed landscaping map, but honestly I don't know if there's enough awareness of this type of feature for the tag to catch on. Perhaps there should be a way to explicitly indicate that the retaining wall is designed to be part of a haha and not just a retaining wall that happens to be next to a ditch, given the safety and aesthetic implications. – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 17:44, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Ha-has are very distinctive landscape features and need to be distinguished from other occurrences of retaining walls & associated ditches. It is relatively easy to create parallel ways representing the two components, but much harder to take two separate components and identify true ha-has. A distinct tag is needed, wether as barrier=* or a sub-tag of retaining wall. The above comments highlight that it is important to realise that there one's perception is not necessarily that of others, there are several within 2 km of where I am sitting, and is a term which I have used since I was 6-7 years old. In fact if someone local said "meet by the bridge over the retaining wall" it would sound daft, but that particular bridge is a popular spot. In the UK they occur predominantly in C17 & C18 landscape parks, and although some will have protected status, not all do. I would think they might number in the hundreds, possibly more than a thousand in the UK. I have also seen modern ones built to enable an unobstructed view from a property with no risk of encroachment by livestock. The wikipedia article Ha-Ha suggests a wall by the Washington Monument is a ha-ha, but as the wall is clear in the photo and can be used as seating this seems unlikely. I've been mapping them in Ireland as ditch=ha-ha as it suggested on the barrier=ditch page. I think there needs to be a clean-up between the two pages. Also, the tag proposed here does not seem to be rendered in JOSM or OSM Standard layer. I will continue using the combination of barrier=ditch and ditch=ha-ha until the rendering and the pages are tidied. There aren't too many, and I don't mind changing them all to the new on in Ireland. It is unfortunate that I have already published a tutorial using the ditch=ha-ha tagging scheme.
