Talk:Tag:military=obstacle course
Only for private training courses on military bases?
Is this tag only for obstacle courses found on military bases without cilivian access, or is it sometimes used for public obstacle courses that are also used by the military? Should "access=no" or "access=private" be implied by this tag? --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:42, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
Implies sport=obstacle_course or is that tag needed?
Right now sport=obstacle_course is listed under both "implies" and as a useful combination. This is a little contradictory. Which one should be picked?--Jeisenbe (talk) 06:42, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- It's actually not. If you take a look at the source code you see that this is only the fault of Template ValueDescription --TBKMrt (talk) 14:43, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Add leisure=pitch or other leisure tag?
Should the area of the obstacle course be tagged as a leisure=pitch or leisure=sports_ centre, like most other areas used for sports / exercise? --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:42, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
Why not nodes? Is area=yes required with closed ways?
The page current says that this feature can be mapped as a line or an area, but not as a node. Why not on a node at the center of the feature?
Since a closed way could represent either an area or a circular obstacle course, should area=yes be recommended when mapped as an area with a closed way? --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:42, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
Removal from Map features page
I saw a few of your edits and I wonder why you did them. Eg. removing military=obstacle_course from the list. I was not able to find any discussion about the removal. The tag is literally used worldwide and there are tags that are used much less than this one. sport=obstacle_course was created at the same time but is even used less. Please help me to understand your edits. At this point I could only describe them as questionable at best. --TBKMrt (talk) 14:50, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- This feature tag has only been used 150 times, compared to 83,000 uses of the Key:military overall; the other features on Template:Map_Features:military have over 1000 uses (except naval_base, which is iffy). Also the documentation on the current wiki page is limited: there is no "how to map" section or combinations and the main definition doesn't mention military landuse. I've added some questions above which need to be clarified to help improve the page.
- That said, I think it's likely this tag can be eventually added back to Map features once the issues are addressed, unless there should be a more general tag for obstacle courses like leisure=obstacle_course or leisure=pitch + sport=obstacle_course, since military obstacle courses are only a minority of the examples of this sort of feature? It would be best to discuss this in a wider forum, perhaps the Tagging list, and complete a proposal page --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:42, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Uses for obstacle course: 183. Key military has 85'401 uses and tag bunker at 49'598 (~58.1%) is the heavy load in there. obstacle_course is at ~0.2%. Key highway is used 154'362'029 times. Tag motorway_junction is used 172'924 times (0.11%) and tag speed_camera is even used less with 40'644 (0.03%). So I guess we have to delete both of them as well, right? There are even more street lamps than both of them combined (street_lamp, 1'239'552 uses, 0.80%) Of course not! If there are no more speed cameras and motorway junctions in the real world, the ammount will not rise if you only tag as much of them as really exist. Noone would get rid of them just for the fact that they are less used than other tags.
- There are currently 17 tags that are less used than obstacle_course and 16 of them beeing even less used than 100 times. obstacle_course is the 16th most used tag in military. There usually is one or zero military style obstacle courses per barracks/training area. The number is thereby limited. During basic or advanced (NCO, Officer) military training you usually have to be at a certain limit on a standardised obstacle course. That standard can vary from country to country, but there is also an international layout that is used for competition purpose.
- The standard layout of military obstacle courses should not be confused with sport=obstacle_course which do not have to follow any particular layout.
- Of course it's a much better idea to remove the page from the list and then talk about it after you have been asked why this was done without any comment. It's always better to shoot first and then ask later. That's why I reverted your edit and care about the description later.

- The page Map Features is a curated list of features that are either very widely used or have been officially appoved via the Proposal process. Anyone can create a new wiki page to describe a new tag, but that doesn't mean it should be added to Map Features without discussion. I've asked a number of questions on this page, above. Please discuss them before adding it back to map features.
