Controversial?

I do not agree with this edit:

• check your spelling
• check the mailing list. The latest discussion on the Tagging ml is "Hot springs and Geysers" from 22 Oct 2018 and I don't see any controversy there so the old controversy around the proposal seems to be gone. In particular - despite many suggestions I don't see any alternative proposal nor any alternative mapping
• the feature has been marked with the status "de facto" since 31 Dec 2015 without raising any discussions about its status

I also support removing the hint. It is the defacto standard tagging. If there were alternatives documented and in use we could link to them, but just stating there are controversies without explaining what kind, seems useless. —Dieterdreist (talk) 20:04, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

This wiki had not been updated thus I did not know there were discussions besides here. That's one frustrating part of OSM where there are least 5 different platforms I know of where people discuss issues (wiki, forum, mailing lists, OSM help, and changeset discussion) and none very well interconnected. But I consider the wiki to be the most important as it serves to document everything. Just because nobody of the 5 people involved in that discussion questioned anything doesn't mean the concerns have dissappeared and no longer exist. I (and likely others) weren't even aware of that disucssion until now. Who decides when something becomes defacto? The proposal doesn't seem to have followed the proposal process with voting and it was changed from draft to de-facto after I mentioned my concerns with it. I'm trying to find more information about 'de facto' and what that means but having a hard time finding any documentation on it. As for alternative mapping it already mostly exists with natural=spring. I used to map with natural=hot_spring but after realizing the issues with it, I have switched to natural=spring and hoping someone will expand on that with a qualifier tag for the temperature. I have reverted my edit for now, but I feel this tag still needs work. DFyson (talk) 07:08, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

I would prefer to separate the natural feature natural=spring, its property temperature=*, and its usage amenity=public_bath. If the exact temperature is unknown, I would accept temperature=hot as a placeholder for the next tagger (with a thermometer ;-). I think this should be listed as an alternative way of tagging the feature. --Biff (talk) 09:11, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
