top/bottom

Should there not be an indication of top/bottom of the sinkhole, according to left/right side of the way, similar to natural=cliff (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dcliff). Way form may not always be suffisant for determination. (2013-03-22)

natural=cliff is a line feature, while natural=sinkhole is an area. The bottom of a sinkhole is always inside, so it does not matter if you draw it clockwise or counter-clockwise. Only if you set both tags on the same object, i.e. natural=sinkhole;cliff (indicating that it's a sinkhole with very steep flanks), you need to draw it clockwise. Beware that most renderers are too dumb to resolve semicolon-separated values. --Fkv (talk) 03:52, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
So if I understand it right natural=sinkhole is either the center or the area of a sinkhole and the cliffs around it tagged with natural=cliff. For volcano crater rims the proposal is to add geologic=volcanic_caldera_rim to the cliffs, maybe similar could be useful for sinkholes? RicoZ (talk) 10:33, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Please don't invent multiple tags for the same thing. natural=sinkhole and natural=cliff already do the job. --Fkv (talk) 11:16, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Does the problem with natural=sinkhole;cliff still persist? RicoZ (talk) 12:05, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
There has never been a problem, because natural=sinkhole;cliff is syntactically correct, and if you want to avoid rendering issues, you can draw two separate objects, one for the cliff and one for the sinkhole. --Fkv (talk) 05:41, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

sinkhole vs. doline

It seems that "sinkhole" is American English, while "doline" is British English. I didn't know about that when I created the wiki page, because I had only read books by non-British authors by then. --Fkv (talk) 20:39, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Doline and sinkhole are different structures. Sinkhole should have natural surface opening where water sinks. See sinkhole=*. --*Martin* (talk) 11:49, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
