Talk:Tag:office=company
Is there any reason why this can only be used for a private company?

- Yeah, I am confused. Why it would not be applicable to state-owned companies? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:57, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Let's encourage mappers to use a more specific tag (was: deprecation)
I propose to deprecate [update: discourage] this tag if more specific tagging is available. For one it isn’t clear what the term “private” refers to (ownership or applicable law) and most importantly, every company can be put into a more specific class, the mere existence of this value only slows down further evolution of the tagging system. —Dieterdreist (talk) 12:59, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
- An equivalent of office=yes??? If additionally tagged with company=* then the deatil can be applied directly to office=*. Warin61 (talk) 23:22, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
- admittedly, office=yes is even more generic (it can be used for any kind of office, be it for a company or any other place). I do not see why we should use office=company, company=* for some companies and office=* for other companies. The key "office" already states that this is an office. While office=company may be ok for those cases where the mapper has no idea what the company is about (but still knows it is a private company, and somehow knows what "private" is intended to mean in this context), but then there is few loss with respect to office=yes and this would at least suggest immature tagging more obviously. I am taking back the idea of "deprecation" and propose to discourage the tag, and actively encourage using a more specific tag. Currently, the definition read: "This tag is used for the office of a private company which does not fit into another more specific category.", my suggestion would be to make this something like "This is a generic tag for the office of a company. It is preferred to use a more specific office tag, see this [list]" --Dieterdreist (talk) 08:00, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
- Just use office=company with company=* if you want more detail Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 23:12, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- While this would be an option, it is currently only done in 1,5% of all instances. And it typically results in duplicates (or “alternatives” if you prefer) to office=* tags. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 21:12, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- or use office=* —-Dieterdreist (talk) 22:13, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- "every company can be put into a more specific class" - can you give more specific examples of preferred replacement tags? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:56, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thinking about it, maybe we should operate the other way round, encourage company=* for businesses, and slowly transition to seeing company=* as a main feature tag.—Dieterdreist (talk) 13:53, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
startup
I believe the tag company=startup is misleading and might be applied to startups. It should better be company=startup_consultancy with the current definition. As of now there are only 16 uses of startup in the world, so they could be checked individually. With these figures it isn’t an established tag. —Dieterdreist (talk) 13:25, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
software_development / it:type=development
What are is the difference between office=company + company=software_development and office=it + it:type=development ? --BavariaTracker (talk) 10:27, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- Usage numbers. Currently company=software_development has 42 uses, it:type=development has just 11 ;-) There are also 80 office=software and 45 company=software. If you look at more meaningful numbers, while there are 140.000 office=company objects, there are actually only 1022 company=* tags, as opposed to 9642 office=it tags, so this is clearly the dominating tag at the moment. --Dieterdreist (talk) 14:21, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
start ups
I believe “startup” should be tagged as a property (if at all, start_date=* seems also a good way to see how old a company is, with its own problems of course (legal restructuring, mergers and acquisitions)), it doesn’t fit as a field of endeavor, which is generally the value of “company”. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 13:50, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
