Source of definition of this tag?

Zorun, thank you for documenting this tag. It's been used over 500 times, so it's reasonable to make a wiki page. However, since it's already in use, it's important that the description on the wiki matches the actual use in the database. Have you checked that "an office for a consulting firm, providing expert professional advice to other companies" accurately describes most of the features with this tag in your area? --Jeisenbe (talk) 09:12, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Good point! I did verify quite a lot of the current features tagged this way in France, Germany, UK and the US.
Almost all of them seem to match this definition (which is quite generic anyway): they either directly have "consulting", "specialist" or "solutions" in their name, or their activity seems compatible with a consulting firm. Some would benefit from more precision with consulting=* (to be documented) or would be better described with another office=* tag, but office=consulting is not completely incorrect. A few features are incorrect because they seem to describe healthcare features. I found one in France (which I fixed) and another one in Germany: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/6487879966

Thank you, that's very helpful. --Jeisenbe (talk) 11:38, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
I wonder why the current definition excludes consulting of individuals. Maybe it's just the wording but "the client of the consulting firm is another company or organisation, and not a physical person." excludes private people to seek advice at these offices and that seems an unnecessary exclusion as not all "private" use cases are covered by other tags.
One example where I would immediately recommend using office=consulting are offices of utility companies (often run by municipalities) that offer advices on energy source and consumption/saving).
Either this use cases is deliberately not covered by this tag (if so then why?) or the wording should be changed to remove the exclusion.

The restriction is intended, for two reasons. First, this definition matches most of the existing data when I created the page (but I haven't checked recently). Second, in my opinion, services that are open to the general public are often better described in amenity=* or shop=*, and I don't want office=consulting to overlap with these keys. But this is open to discussion, and I don't have a solution for your use-case. --Zorun (talk) 14:14, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
