Difference between this and sub-station?

Why was this tag ever introduced? There are not such things as power=station (not in the sense of substations at least)! They are always called substations irrespective of size and voltage. For reference see Wikipedia. And according to Wikipedia a "power station" is a power plant. Not strange that this tag leads to confusion. I came across a major power plant in Denmark tagged as power=station a couple of days ago. A little search on Google supports this terminology. I would propose to have this tag deprecated. polderrunner 16:07, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Caution tag

I have added a 'caution' tag to this article while the above questions as to its relevance and distinction from sub-station are resolved. Personally I don't have a big view over the outcome, but I do note that sub-station is a much older key according to the wiki and can't be confused with a 'power (generation) station' which seems to be relevant. Let's keep the tag in place while we resolve the issue and then remove it. PeterIto 20:03, 23 May 2011 (BST)

power=station to be deprecated

It has been suggested to deprecate the use of power=station, see the current discussion on the tagging list [1]. There is a general concensus on the list that the tag is confusing, unnecessary and should better be deprecated. power=sub_station is a better choice for all substations since the size and importance of a substation can easily be indicated using voltage=*. As a result it is the plan to mark power=station as deprecated in the near future unless there are significant objections to do so. --polderrunner 08:27, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

The distinction has been pointed out by Martin Koppenhöfer in the discussion you cited. But congratulations: since you declared power=station as "deprecated" (not that the term had a well-defined meaning in OSM), a number of mindless followers have gone on to retag the existing stations. -- Oli-Wan (talk) 18:13, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

The page currently says:

• Only retag to power=substation if you also add a voltage=* tag or a substation=* tag, preferably both. The voltage tag should include at least the highest voltage used in the substation.

If you don't know the voltage used or the substation type then better leave the power=station tag in place.

Why that? If I can tell (e.g. from areal imagery) that it's a substation, not a plant, but don't know the voltage and can't determine the exact substation type, wouldn't the information that it is a substation still be useful? The article on power=substation list both voltage=* and substation=* as optional. --Das-g (talk) 09:16, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

Agree with you, this isn't well written. voltage=* is actually recommended with power=substation, users are strongly encouraged to add it when they move a sub_station/station to substation.

Much better, thank you. Should the fixme=* tag really be recommended there, though?

1. AFAIK, a power=substation object without further tags might be incomplete information, but it isn't per-se wrong or broken, so todo=* seem more appropriate, if at all.
2. If power=substation objects without voltage=* or without substation=* tags are considered incomplete, that is an incompleteness which can easily be detected in the data itself and can be searched for by mappers inclined to go out and fix it.

IMHO fixme and todo tags are mainly useful where a one cannot detect an error or incompleteness in the data itself, but would have to know the ground truth to tell that something's missing or wrong.
