What is the best way to tag dual tracks?

• two ways (much work)
• one way with lanes=2 (or is that just for roads?)
• one way with railway_tracks=2 (nonstandard, but in use)

Would it be possible to employ both multiple ways and a tag of lanes/tracks=2? I know that several of the US state's rail transportation data employs one line segment for each rail track, run down the centerline. If multiple ways are employed, network routing of rail-based traffic could be performed. If one were to use OSM for demand modeling, capacity (in the form of number of tracks) would also be key.

Merge proposal with Key:railway

I think that this wiki page should be removed and merged with Key:railway because it isn't actually needed. All information on this page can be found on the KEY page.

I don't really want to get into voting on this, but do agree with Frankie. It might be as easy to find the key railway as the value rail in this example, but for consistency with other tags this page I feel should remain - someone may be able to do something clever for example by automatically parsing the Tags or Tags by Values category page(s) so having a particular tag page missing would make whatever tool they invent less effective (admittedly there are a lot of Tag pages that don't yet exist). --EdLoach 23:59, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes we're going for documentation of every key and tag as Frankie says. Also I think there is possibly more to add to this page, which would give it more distinct purpose. Key:railway is a list of values. On this page let's describe exactly what railway=rail means. highway=motorail?

There are several locations in Switzerland with a tunnel through the mountains for trains, but not one for cars. Therefore, cars can be loaded onto special trains for transportation across the tunnel. As the travelling time is relatively short (usually <15min), people stay inside their cars. Service hours are usually 5-22, interval depending on demand (usually 1x - 5x per hour).

Two ways of mapping this came to my mind:

• For ferries, the use of motorcar/foot/...=yes/no is common to specify what is transported. This could be adopted for these trainlines. -> motorcar=yes
• a new highway=motorail could be introduced, which would be combined with the existing railway=rail/light_rail

same as with ferries, some information about service hours, intervals and duration should be added. see Talk:Tag:route=ferry

Are these railways exclusively for transporting cars? I'd suggest doing the same as what we do for the Channel Tunnel Channel Tunnel and just use railway=rail, perhaps with a motorcar=yes? Frankie Roberto 16:49, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

By now, I'm sceptic about service relations. I currently use the same schematics as for ferries, as stated above. Unless good reasons come up to do otherwise, I will leave it as is by now - especially since all has been tagged, and changing will be not too much work either. --RalpH himself 16:20, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Trains run on Railways.

Can anyone explain why my editor now shows railway lines as the awful americaneze 'train tracks'? I've checked my settings, both on Id and on my browser, and I'm still "en-GB en". Any railway expert will tell you that a 'train' is a collection of carriages that runs on railway lines. Railway lines have railway stations where the public can interface with trains from time to time.....
